Scholarship Description:

The English-Speaking Union is inviting applications for Postdoctoral Research Grants for Scientists to carry out their research at a host institution in the USA. Fellowships are available for students who hold British, Irish or Commonwealth citizenship and be normally resident in the UK.

These Fellowships enable postdoctoral scientists to pursue research in the USA without financial difficulty, and without being obliged to take up paid employment.

Host College/University:

The English-Speaking Union (ESU) is an international educational charity and membership organisation that brings together people of different languages and cultures in over 50 countries. Through the help of our branches and international ESUs, we run educational programs, competitions and cultural exchanges to develop confident communicators, critical thinkers and empowered citizens.

Degree level:

Fellowships are available to pursue Postdoctoral scientists.

Field of Study:

Each fellowship lasts for one year and supports research in the fields of astronomy, biophysics, chemistry, engineering, geology, geophysics, mathematics and physics.

Scholarship Award: 

The English-Speaking Union offers up to three grants a year, worth $50,000 each, for postdoctoral scientists to carry out their research at a host institution in the USA.

Nationalities:

Fellowships are available for students who hold British, Irish or Commonwealth citizenship and be normally resident in the UK.

Eligibility Criteria:

 To be eligible to apply, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  1. Hold British, Irish or Commonwealth citizenship and be normally resident in the UK
  2. Either be in the final stages of your doctoral studies at a UK university or have completed your doctorate at a UK university within the last three academic years.

English Language Requirements: 

Applicants whose first language is not English are usually required to provide evidence of proficiency in English at the higher level required by the University.

Applying procedure Instructions:

Candidates will be required to complete an online application form. A letter of endorsement from the proposed host institution must be uploaded as part of this application process (please see the below ‘Notes for Host Endorsement Letter’) and two confidential references must be sent directly to the ESU before the application closing date.
